I created a new Apple Account and tried to sign in through Apple's website. Apple required me to set up two-factor authentication with a phone number, which seemed fine—I received the verification code and entered it correctly. However, the site responded with "An unknown error has occurred."
This issue seems to have been reported for years. Is there a reliable way to get past it, and what usually causes this error during account creation or sign-in?

This error can happen when the phone number or email address is already associated with another Apple Account, being used as a recovery address, or isn’t accepted for a new account. Apple may also show a vague error instead of explaining the exact reason for security purposes. Try checking those details and signing up without a VPN, public Wi‑Fi, hotspot, or other unusual network setup.
There may be an account or network validation issue rather than a problem with the verification code itself. Double-check that the number and email aren’t already tied to another account, then try again from a standard private connection with VPNs and similar privacy tools disabled.

I used a normal existing phone number, not a spoofed or compromised one. Apple says one number can be used with multiple accounts, but the sign-in still fails. I also contacted Apple Support, and they couldn’t determine why the error appeared.
