Why is my PC thermal throttling despite good CPU and GPU temps?

Hey everyone,

I'm dealing with an annoying issue where my PC is thermal throttling during heavy gaming sessions, like when I'm playing Cyberpunk 2077. I started using ThrottleStop to keep an eye on things, and I discovered that my system is sending out BD PROCHOT signals, which suggests my CPU is being throttled.

At first, I thought the problem was due to high CPU temperatures, but since replacing my cooler, I've been monitoring the temps and both my CPU and GPU are fine. However, the throttling continues.

I then checked the VRM temperatures on my motherboard and found that they reached a whopping 110 degrees Celsius! Could this be what's causing the throttle signals? And if so, would anyone be able to recommend a motherboard that would help resolve this issue?

Here are my specs for reference:
- CPU: Intel Core i7-10700k @ 3.80GHz (Turbo at 5.1GHz)
- Motherboard: Gigabyte B460M DS3H
- RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 2x16GB DDR4-3600 CL16
- GPU: RTX 3080 10GB
- PSU: Corsair RM850X 850W
- Storage: Kingston A400 SSD, Seagate Barracuda HDD 2TB, WD Black SN850X 2TB M.2

Thanks for any help!

First off, what case are you using? And what's the cooler for your CPU? Those VRM temps at 110°C are definitely concerning! Try removing the side panel of your case and point a fan directly at the motherboard temporarily to see if the throttling happens then. It might help lower the VRM temps.

I have a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 Evo cooler and an NZXT H510 case with Corsair ML120 fans. I read that my motherboard lacks adequate heat sinks, which probably contributes to the heat buildup. Thanks for the tip about the fan!
