Why is my PC’s performance dropping even after upgrades?

I built my first PC back in 2018 with what I thought were future-proof parts, but now I'm experiencing significant drops in performance and frame rates in almost every game. My current setup includes an Asus Maximus IX Hero motherboard, 32GB of DDR4 2600MHz RAM, an i7-8700K CPU, an RTX 5070 graphics card (which I recently upgraded from a 1070), a 1000W power supply, and a 2TB SSD 870 EVO. Despite this, I'm getting as low as 20 FPS on medium settings in Rust, which I find hard to believe, considering the CPU should not bottleneck that much in this game. I'm not looking to replace everything due to high RAM prices. I'm considering upgrading my CPU and motherboard, but I'm hoping for some advice or solutions before I proceed. Thanks!

Your CPU is getting pretty old—it's been around for about 9 years now. Rust is particularly demanding on the CPU, so it wouldn't be surprising if it's your bottleneck. I’d suggest looking into getting an Intel 14600K or KF with a DDR4 B760 motherboard. That should help you reuse your current RAM while giving you a good boost.

I remember when that CPU was a big deal! But yeah, it might be time to upgrade—especially if gaming performance is critical to you.
