Why is my Ryzen 7 7700X running so hot?

I recently upgraded from a Ryzen 5 8400F to a Ryzen 7 7700X, and since then, I've noticed my core temperatures skyrocketing to around 80-90 degrees Celsius. I initially thought it might be due to old thermal paste, so I bought a new one and reapplied it carefully, bringing the temp down to about 73 degrees. However, that still feels too high for idle conditions. My CPU fan is functioning properly, and I've cleaned out any dust. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this overheating?

You might want to check if your case fans are set up correctly. If they're all blowing inwards, that could cause hot air to accumulate inside. Just a thought!

I don't think that's the case because my case feels cool inside. It seems like it's just the CPU getting hot.

The Ryzen 7 7700X has a TDP of 105 watts, compared to your old CPU's 65 watts. If you’re using the cooler from the old CPU, it might not be enough to handle the new one. Consider getting a dual tower air cooler; they aren’t very expensive and work really well! The Peerless Assassin 120SE is a solid choice.

This makes a lot of sense! Would undervolting the CPU be a temporary fix until I get a new cooler?
