Will Debian Support New Hardware and Resource-Intensive Software?

I have a secondary PC, a HP Pavilion with a robust AMD Athlon processor. I mainly use it for light tasks like programming in C and Rust, and enhancing my knowledge of the Shell. I'm curious if Debian can effectively run heavier software like Steam, VirtualBox, and emulators such as RPCS3 or Ryujinx. Additionally, will it support the latest hardware, particularly the B850M-X motherboard, Ryzen 5 9600X processor, and the Radeon 9060XT GPU? The GPU is my main concern here.

I can't say for sure if Debian will unleash the full potential of your hardware, but it should function. If you're up for it, you might find Arch-based distros like CachyOS or the classic Arch itself to be more fitting for cutting-edge hardware. Fedora and its derivatives, like Nobara, are also solid choices that offer good stability and performance.

If gaming on cutting-edge Debian is what you want, definitely check out PikaOS.

Debian generally handles new hardware well, though it may take some time for support to arrive. It's a good idea to boot from the installation media and test things out without fully committing. This way, you can check compatibility before installing.

Yes, but for newer hardware, you might need to enable the backports repository to get the latest drivers and firmware updates. Alternatively, using Debian Testing or Sid (the rolling version of Debian) is another option, but it's not ideal for those unfamiliar with Linux. If gaming is a primary use case, consider PikaOS—it's optimized for gaming on newer hardware.

How do I actually use the 'backports' feature?

You can enable backports in your sources list and then update your system. It'll give you access to newer packages.
