Xubuntu vs Linux Mint XFCE: Which Lightweight Distro Should I Pick?

Hey everyone! I've just started my Linux journey about a week ago and have tried Linux Mint with the Cinnamon desktop. I liked it, but I'm looking for something that's lighter on system resources. I also experimented with Lubuntu, but I found the customization options pretty lacking and a bit frustrating. I'm hoping to find a lightweight distro, ideally based on Ubuntu or Debian since I'm still a beginner, but I want something that I can customize to my tastes. Any recommendations?

You might want to check out Hyprland if you're interested in really customizing your setup. It’s getting a lot of love in the r/unixporn community! Also, while many say stay away from Arch, it's incredibly riceable and lightweight, and it's where I learned the most about Linux. Just be prepared for a learning curve!

Haha, I might consider Arch when I'm ready for the deep end!

If you're really into customization, keep in mind that it's less about the distro and more about the desktop environment you choose. I personally love AntiX, which is lightweight and based on Debian. Also, check out MX Linux from the same team; that's a popular one too!

Appreciate the tips on AntiX and MX Linux!

Honestly, both Xubuntu and Linux Mint XFCE are solid choices. The differences in resource usage are minimal. For a beginner, I'd recommend either Mint XFCE or Xubuntu. Just see which one feels more comfortable for you after trying them out! I'd skip straight to those instead of going for Debian right off the bat.

It's tricky because really lightweight and highly customizable don't usually go hand in hand. More custom features mean more code, which can add to the load. That said, KDE Plasma is surprisingly lightweight and super customizable if you're willing to dive into it a little.

I'll give KDE Plasma a shot, thanks!
