Are My Ryzen 7 Temperatures Normal?

I just built my first PC with an AMD Ryzen 7 7700 and I'm using an SE-207-XT air cooler. I'm noticing that my idle temperatures are around 42-45°C, but when I put the CPU under full load, the temps spike up to 85-86°C. Is this range normal? I'm really new to this and want to make sure everything is okay. Also, I have a Corsair 3500X ARGB case. Should I change my fan settings in the BIOS to PWM from DC? I've noticed that when I switch to PWM, my idle temps go up to about 50°C. Any advice on how to improve this? Thanks for your help!

Switching your fans to PWM is a good call! They’ll run at higher speeds only when needed, so it’s more efficient. Your temperatures seem normal for the workload, and if they were dangerous, your CPU would likely have shut itself down by now. Just keep an eye on them!

I appreciate the help! I switched over to PWM, and it’s definitely quieter now. After testing again, my max temp is still 88°C under full load. Is it okay to keep using smart fan mode? While gaming, it goes into the mid-60s, which isn’t too bad.

Your idle temps look fine, but that 85-86°C under full load is on the higher side. It’s not thermal throttling yet, but it makes me a bit uncomfortable. I'd recommend setting your fans to PWM and creating a more aggressive fan curve to help cool things down. That should make a difference!

Thanks for the info! By the way, how do I actually set those fan curves? I've got an MSI motherboard if that helps.

I switched to PWM and stress tested again, but it hit 88°C. Not ideal. It does drop to the low 50s when I have some light apps like Spotify and Google open though.

Your temperatures are generally safe because modern Ryzen CPUs can boost up to 95°C without issues. If you're worried, consider using eco mode in the BIOS to limit the power consumption, which will help keep temps down at the cost of some performance.

Thanks for the tip! Should I keep 'fan smart mode' enabled too? I’ll take a peek in my BIOS for that eco mode.
