Help! Windows 11 Gray Screen After CHKDSK – Can’t Boot Normally or into Safe Mode

Hey folks! I'm facing a major issue with Windows 11. It started running a CHKDSK scan on my C: drive automatically during boot-up, without me initiating it. Now, after logging in, I'm stuck on a gray screen. There's no desktop, no taskbar, just a mouse cursor.

I occasionally see an error saying, "NVIDIA Control Panel not found." Safe Mode doesn't work either; I just get the same gray screen. I've tried running explorer.exe through Task Manager, but it doesn't change anything.

Here's what I've tried so far: 1) I ran 'sfc /scannow' and got no integrity violations. 2) Then I ran 'DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth,' but it failed with an error about missing source repair files. 3) Safe Mode still leads to the gray screen. 4) I attempted to reset my PC while keeping my files, but it failed too. 5) I even tried to uninstall the latest updates but got errors again. 6) I attempted creating a new desktop profile, but I'm still facing the same issue.

On the bright side, I can still open Task Manager and Command Prompt, and I can access my files using other methods. However, some functions, like volume keys and certain apps, aren't working. Do you think I should just wipe everything and reinstall Windows? Any advice would be welcomed!

Definitely back up your files first! If you're still having issues after trying everything else, a fresh install seems like the only way to go. It's a pain, but it usually resolves numerous weird issues like the one you're experiencing. Make sure your important data is safe before wiping anything!

It really sounds frustrating! If you’ve already tried several troubleshooting steps and you still can’t get past the gray screen, backing up your important data and doing a fresh install might be the best route. It might feel drastic, but sometimes after an issue like this, starting fresh can save you a lot of hassle in the long run.
