Hey everyone, I built my PC a couple of years ago, and lately, I've noticed it's been performing poorly despite having decent specifications. A lot of folks online tell me I should be getting around 120 fps consistently in Fortnite and 60 fps in Call of Duty, but my experience is far from that.
Here are my specs:
- Ryzen 5 5600G
- RX 6600 XT
- 32GB 3200MHz RAM
- 2TB SSD
I usually keep my drivers set to auto-update and haven't explored updating them manually, so I'm wondering if that's where the issue lies. I'm still learning about how PCs work, and even with a mid-range CPU, I expect to run games like Fortnite smoothly at 1080p or 1440p.
I also use Radeon's software for upscaling from 1080 to 1440, but I'm still experiencing performance drops. For instance, Warzone only runs at about 50 fps with significant choppiness, Fortnite struggles around 60 fps, and games like Elden Ring are pretty much unplayable. Certain games like Dead by Daylight, GTA V Enhanced, and Warframe seem to run fine, though.
Ultimately, I just want to play COD, Fortnite, and Elden Ring at steady frame rates, ideally on medium to high settings at 1080p. Any insights on what could be wrong?

Have you checked your thermals? Sometimes overheating can cause performance issues and throttling, which might be why you're seeing drops in FPS.
Just to be sure, your monitor is connected to the graphics card and not the motherboard, right? Confirming that can save you from a lot of headaches.
You might want to disable features like Radeon Enhanced Sync, as well as Vsync. It’s better to use Vsync from the AMD software instead of in-game. Also, consider disabling fullscreen optimizations and overlays like Discord. Try switching to different fullscreen modes as well; that helped me with stuttering in some games.
It sounds like your RX 6600 XT should be great for 1080p. Have you tried playing directly at 1080p instead of relying on upscaling? If you’re having issues even at 1080p, there could definitely be something off with your setup.
Yeah, I mentioned I use 1080p and upscale, but even then the frame drops are horrible, going from 144 to 80 or lower. My FPS dips into the 50-60 range and it’s just choppy.
Honestly, I'm in the same boat. I'm just trying to figure out why my PC is underperforming.
Yep, it’s connected to the graphics card. I’m pretty sure the cables are fine.
