I'm looking to buy some new DDR4 RAM and I've found two options I like, both priced similarly. One is a 3600MHz CL18 model, and the other is a 3200MHz CL16 model. My motherboard supports a maximum speed of 3200MHz, so I'm curious if I can run the 3600MHz RAM at that speed. Additionally, would I be able to tighten the timings down to CL16, or would I be limited to the CL18 timings even when the frequency is lowered? Here's the specific RAM models I'm considering:
1. F4-3600C18D-32GTZN (18-22-22-42)
2. F4-3200C16D-32GTZR (16-18-18-38)

What CPU and motherboard are you pairing it with?
That setup should handle it well then!
Yeah, you can probably run that 3600MHz RAM at 3200MHz, and you might have a shot at lowering the timings to CL16. It really comes down to your specific RAM chips and how well you can tune them. If setting a memory profile doesn't work, you might have to adjust things manually. Just keep in mind that tweaking can sometimes require a bit of trial and error, especially if you want tighter timings like CL14 later on!
It's definitely possible! Most DDR4 RAM can run at 3200CL16, but it might need some voltage tweaks. The 3600CL18 should be fine with that. Just be aware that your motherboard likely supports the 3600CL18 even if it says otherwise in the specs; these settings usually aren't too hard for most setups. I'm using a 5700X3D with an Asus ROG Strix B350 F Gaming.
