Looking for Alternatives to Barracuda ESG for On-Prem Email Security

We're currently using Barracuda's virtual appliance Email Security Gateway (ESG), but they've announced it's being discontinued. This ESG cluster is crucial for relaying emails for hundreds of internal applications, supporting both our users in a hybrid Exchange environment and external recipients like customers and vendors. We're really happy with its performance, so we're looking for alternatives that provide similar features. Here's what we need:

- Control over relaying permissions with detailed notes per allowed IP.
- Reports on outbound email volume.
- Integrated spam filtering, rate limiting, and other protections to avoid issues from compromised systems.
- A way to view email queues in real-time for troubleshooting.
- Compatibility with VMware for easy failover options to our DR site alongside other VMs.
- High availability clustering behind load balancers.

We're specifically looking for on-premises solutions that can be hosted on VMware, whether it's something we self-install or a ready-to-use virtual appliance. We prefer to avoid SaaS solutions like SMTP2GO or SendGrid, and while we're open to both paid and open-source options, I'd rather not switch to using our on-prem Exchange servers for relaying due to visibility concerns.

If you're considering open-source solutions, there are a couple of Linux-based options. While not as tailored for Windows, you might want to check Hmailserver and E-MailRelay, although I've heard they may not be the most robust for production use.

Have you looked into Proxmox Mail Gateway? It might fit what you're searching for in terms of on-prem usability. It’s open-source and can give you decent flexibility.

It sounds like you're in a tight spot. I totally get your concerns about moving away from Barracuda. I've heard that Cisco ESA could meet your needs; their licensing is by user, and you can have multiple virtual appliances. However, keep in mind that while their GUI might not offer real-time queue viewing, you could potentially manage that through SSH commands.
