How Long Should I Wait for My Computer Repair?

Last Tuesday, I took my desktop to a repair shop because I couldn't factory reset Windows and wanted a clean slate before installing a new GPU. They just updated me that my motherboard and CPU might be faulty since they can't get past the BIOS, and they're testing different CPUs now. I'm wondering how long these types of troubleshooting issues typically take. Is it normal to wait this long, or should I consider checking out other shops?

Honestly, every repair shop is different, and they all have varying workloads and staff. If you didn't pay for express service or anything, waiting for a while is pretty standard. If you're anxious, just give them a call and ask for an update!

From my experience, if there are issues with recovery, it usually points to a failing hard drive or SSD. Whenever I worked on a PC, I would take an image of the drive first and then troubleshoot. It’s odd that they’d hold onto your PC for a week without updating you. Just make sure when you pick it up that you’re getting all of your original parts back, and consider getting a second opinion.

Waiting a week isn’t totally out of the question, but if they suddenly tell you they need to replace major parts like the motherboard or CPU, that raises red flags. If your CPU can get into the BIOS, it’s still functional at a basic level. I’d suggest getting your computer back and seeing if you can fix it elsewhere or at least have a clearer idea from a different technician.

Good advice! I’ll keep that in mind and make sure I double-check all the components I take back.

It sounds like what you're dealing with originally was a software issue with Windows, which usually shouldn't take more than an hour to sort out by reinstalling from a USB. If they suddenly came back saying your motherboard and CPU are bad, that's a bit suspicious, especially if you weren't having issues before. It seems like they might be fabricating a larger problem. I’d definitely consider getting a second opinion or at least pick up your system if they’re not making progress.

That makes sense! I'm planning to give them until Friday, but if they don’t have answers, I think I'll head to another shop for a second opinion.
