I'm in the process of upgrading my old PC setup and need some advice on CPU choices for the AM4 socket in 2025. My previous GPU was a 1050 Ti, but I'm upgrading to an RTX 3080, which I managed to find for just $165. I don't plan on switching to AM5 for a couple more years, so I want to ensure I choose a solid CPU. Here are the options I'm considering:
- R5 5600 - $95
- R7 5800X - $150
- R7 5700X3D - $225
- R9 5950X - $232
- R7 5800X3D - $280
I run dual monitors: one at 1080p and another at 1440p. I'm also open to other CPU suggestions for the AM4 socket!

If you're focused on gaming, the 5800X or 5800XT might be the way to go, especially if they are easier to find and less expensive. The X3D models can be tough to come by and often out of stock. But if you can snag a 5700X3D for the listed price, it's probably the best bet.
For gaming on AM4, the 5700X3D is definitely the choice unless you want the 5800X3D, but that one's a lot pricier for just tiny performance boosts. If you're more into productivity tasks like video editing, then the 5950X could suit you better because of its higher core count.
Honestly, at this point, the 5700X3D gives you the best bang for your buck for gaming. Going with the X3D models typically means spending a lot more for marginal gains. That said, if your workload includes stuff like CAD or video rendering, then the higher-core models might be worth the investment.
I'd definitely go for the 5700X3D if it fits your budget. It's known for great price-to-performance ratio. The 5800X3D is nice, but it doesn't justify the extra cost unless you really need every bit of performance out there. Also, the 5700X3D still stacks up well against some AM5 CPUs, especially since you're not gaming at 4K.
Is the prices I mentioned are similar in your region?
If you're on a tight budget, the Ryzen 5500 might work for you, but if you can swing it, the 5700X3D is the best choice for gaming. It's solid and won't break the bank compared to the X3D line.
That’s true, but I’ve heard the 5800XT is a solid alternative for only about 10% less performance.
Those listed prices are the only available ones for me. Also, isn't the XT a GPU thing?
