Is it okay to use Copilot during interviews?

I have an upcoming final round interview with my dream company and I'm preparing for it. The interview involves spending 25 minutes building an additional feature based on my take-home assignment. I'm wondering whether it's acceptable to use GitHub Copilot during this time. Should I ask the interviewer first? I feel like using it could be beneficial when developing an app live, but I'm unsure about the etiquette. What's everyone's experience with this?

As someone involved in interviews, I focus on seeing how well candidates understand the problem. Copilot might be useful in your day-to-day job, but in interviews, I’d prefer if you didn't rely on it. If they tell you it's fine, great—if not, it's best to skip it.

I’ve seen mixed opinions on this. Some companies are okay with using AI as a supportive tool, while others want to see your raw skills. Asking if it’s acceptable at the start might clear things up! Just keep in mind that the goal is for them to see how you solve problems on your own.

I would err on the side of caution and probably not use it. If it’s not clear, just ask them directly if using Copilot is an option. It could be a chance to show that you're up to date with tools while still proving your own coding capability.

Honestly, I think interviewers want to see your own thought process, not just what tools can do for you. If you use Copilot to speed things up while explaining your approach, that’s probably okay, but make sure you really understand what you're doing. If you're just relying on it to think for you, that could be a red flag for them.

I’d recommend assuming 'no' on using Copilot unless the interviewer explicitly says it’s okay. If you do decide to ask, you could phrase it like, "Is it alright if I use Copilot for this task?" Just make sure you show your own skills beyond just what the AI can do.
