Tips for Migrating Email from GoDaddy to Microsoft Business Standard

Hi all! I'm the new IT/System Administrator at a small company with just nine employees, including myself. My boss isn't very tech-savvy, and we're currently using GoDaddy for our Outlook email addresses (format: [email protected]). Our software licenses for things like Word and Excel are also a mixed bag of personal and family licenses, which is just wild. I've been put in charge of migrating us to Microsoft Business Standard.

I'm following the tminus365 guide about defederation, but I won't lie, I'm feeling a bit anxious since I haven't done this before aside from dabbling as a comp-sci student. The challenge is that several staff members have been here for years and rely on their mailboxes almost like filing cabinets. Plus, we've got around 1,000 printers out in the field that need SMTP access for scan-to-email using emails provided by GoDaddy.

My plan is to defederate, quickly reset the scan-to-email passwords via PowerShell to avoid chaos, have the users reset their passwords, cancel the GoDaddy licenses, and get new Microsoft licenses. However, I'm just feeling paranoid about potential pitfalls—am I missing anything important? I appreciate any advice you all can lend!

Make sure you don't cancel GoDaddy licenses before you secure the Microsoft ones. If you terminate GoDaddy too early, you might end up with a gap where no one has access to their mailboxes. It's crucial to disconnect GoDaddy from Office 365 first to avoid any lockout issues. I recommend revisiting the guide for any critical steps you might have missed.

At a minimum, consider switching to Microsoft Business Premium licenses instead. It could provide you with better features and support for your needs.

Think of this migration not as a transfer but more like removing GoDaddy's layer from your Office 365 setup. You can minimize hassle by only resetting the passwords of accounts that really need it; user accounts can keep their current passwords unless necessary. Just a thought—good luck!
