Why Can’t I Create Two Partitions on My External Drive?

I'm using the free version of Disk Genius on a 4TB external hard drive. I can easily format the whole disk into a single 4TB partition, and that works perfectly. However, when I try to split it into two 2TB partitions, the second one shows up as 'MS basic data partition' and I can't access it. I've attempted to format it to exFAT, but after formatting, it still just appears as 'MS basic data partition' with no errors reported. When I try to format it to NTFS, I get an error (00000000) indicating an unknown error. After this, Disk Genius gives me an error about GUID backup partition table damage, and trying to fix it doesn't help; the error keeps showing up if I unplug and replug the drive. I've also tried other tools, but they seem to have the same issues with the second partition.

Have you tried using Diskpart? It's a command-line tool that can sometimes handle partitioning better than GUI tools. Just make sure to back up your data first. Once in Diskpart, you can list the disks, select your external drive, and create partitions from there.

I ran into a similar issue with non-English error messages when using Diskpart. The message I got was something like 'data area passed to the system call is too small'. It might help to run the operation with administrative rights or check for any updates for your disk management tools.
