I'm primarily a Windows user, but I need to use Linux as my desktop OS for work purposes. I have a 27" 4K HiDPI screen, and I want to find a beginner-friendly Linux distribution that can handle scaling well. I've tried Linux Mint but faced issues with fractional scaling being too slow to use for basic tasks like watching YouTube. Integer scaling results in either too large (200%) or too small (100%) elements, making it tough to interact with windows. I also struggled with modifying gtk.css files for a better experience. Is there a sensible approach or specific distros and desktop environments that work well for HiDPI screens? I want to get comfortable with Linux, so I can transition from Windows when the time comes.

You might want to skip scaling altogether and just go for a larger font size, big icon sets, and a larger mouse cursor theme. That way, your desktop elements stay usable without the performance hit from scaling.
That sounds helpful, but does using larger icons actually help with the size of window controls like min/max buttons? I feel like the default icon sets still make those too small.
