Why is my old monitor crackling and should I replace it?

I've got a 12-year-old Iiyama 24-inch monitor that's started making a crackling sound, almost like it's arcing. I work in tech but haven't encountered this before. Since it uses CCFL backlights, could the bulb be dying? The sound seems to be coming from the top back of the monitor and not from any speakers.

Given that your monitor is pretty old and employs CCFL backlights, it’s definitely possible that the bulb is nearing the end of its life. If the crackling sound is bothering you and it’s not under warranty anymore, replacing it might be the best option. You can find decent monitors for really low prices these days, especially on sites like eBay or even at local charity shops.

I totally understand your hesitation, but since you mentioned you were contemplating an upgrade anyway, this might be the push you need. If it’s crackling now, it probably won’t last too much longer. It could be worth investing in a newer model, maybe even a larger screen since you mentioned considering a 27-inch monitor. It might enhance your workspace!
