Should I Choose the 4060 or 3060 for 1080p Gaming and Video Editing?

I'm considering getting an RTX 4060 for 1080p gaming and video editing. I know it receives a lot of criticism, but I'm trying to figure out whether I should go for that or save some cash and get the RTX 3060 12GB instead. Being new to PC stuff, I'm quite confused. Is 8GB on the 4060 really not enough? Why is it considered a poor choice? I don't plan on playing the latest AAA titles at ultra settings—medium graphics are fine since I'm currently stuck playing on low. Plus, I've heard CUDA is beneficial for editing, which is why I'm leaning towards NVIDIA, but I'm open to AMD as well. So, should I go for the 3060, the 4060, or maybe another GPU altogether? I'd appreciate any straightforward advice! Thanks!

Between the 4060 and 3060, the 4060 is generally the way to go regardless of the critiques. It will outperform the 3060, even if it has 8GB of VRAM. For 1080p gaming, that should still hold you well.

A lot of recent games are increasingly demanding, using up 9-10GB of VRAM even at 1080p. If you run out of VRAM, your performance can really drop off, especially for video editing where more VRAM can be beneficial. So keep that in mind when deciding!

Yeah, if you run out of RAM or VRAM, it can sink your performance fast. Going over CPU or GPU limits usually just means slower performance, but hitting that VRAM wall can turn your smooth gameplay into a messy slideshow.

Totally agree! Even with my 4070, I notice it using around 80-90% VRAM at 1080p in games, and I'm not even maxing out the settings.

I’ve been in the same boat. I was looking at the 4060, 7600XT, and Intel A770. Ultimately, I went with the 7600XT because it has 16GB of VRAM. Maybe consider the A770 if you want something good for productivity and still decent for 1080p gaming. I think the 3060 may not even fully utilize its 12GB VRAM, and the 4060’s performance is limited by its VRAM too.
