It's been over a decade since I used any Apple products, but I just received an email saying my Apple ID was used to log into iMessage on a phone that I don't own. The email advised me to change my password. The issue is, I can't remember my password from so long ago! I've tried the 'forgot password' option, but I've heard it could take a long time for them to authenticate me. What should I do? Is my Apple ID compromised, and will I be able to regain control of it?

That email might be a scam. It's best to delete it without clicking any links. If you've entered any passwords on a site after clicking a link from that email, assume it's compromised and change your passwords across all your accounts. Don't reuse any old passwords either!
But the email seems real since it had my name and email. I didn't click any links and just went directly to the Apple ID site to reset my password.
