How to Set Up Internet in My Room with Existing Ethernet Ports?

I'm looking to improve my internet connection in my room on the second floor. The house has Ethernet ports in the walls of each room, which I assume means there's wiring throughout. Can I just get another modem for my room and connect it to the Ethernet port in the wall? Also, any suggestions for a budget-friendly modem?

You definitely want to avoid using multiple modems, as that can complicate your internet setup with issues like double NAT. The best option would be to use a simple access point in your room. Just connect the Ethernet port in your wall back to the main modem, and from there, a single cable to an access point in your room should do the trick! If you need specific product recommendations, I can help with that too!

That makes sense! I'll look into getting an access point instead. Thanks for the advice!

It sounds like you might already have a wired setup in your house. Instead of adding a second modem, you should consider using a network switch. You'd connect your main modem to an 8 or 16 port switch, and then run Ethernet cables from that switch to the ports in each room. That way, you'll have reliable wired internet without the hassle of setting up multiple modems. Just make sure your Ethernet ports are already configured correctly, or else you won't get the full benefits!
