I recently bought a 4070 and tried it with a 1440p monitor, but I ended up not liking the experience and returned it. Now I'm back to my 1080p 144Hz monitor. I'm wondering if using a 4070 with 1080p is overkill, and if I should consider getting a cheaper GPU since I'm mainly playing competitive games.

Not at all! Especially if you prefer a higher FPS while gaming. Unless it's a major financial concern, I say stick with the 4070. I personally found 1440p to be a massive upgrade; I get that the 27-inch monitor can be hefty though.
You definitely don't need to downgrade. It's nice to have some extra power when playing competitive games. Just enjoy the better experience the 4070 offers!
In this day and age of games not being fully optimized, the 4070 isn't overkill for 1080p. It'll future-proof your setup better than lower-end cards.
Exactly! Plus, if you ever decide to upgrade your monitor again, you'll be ready.
Just keep your 4070! Having an overkill GPU isn't a bad thing. It'll keep your frame rates high, and you'll get more longevity out of your hardware.
Right? Investing in a better GPU pays off in the long run for sure.
Yeah, larger screens can tire your eyes if you’re not used to it. I stick to 24 inches myself for that reason.
