Problems Installing Linux on My Optiplex 5060

Hey everyone! I'm trying to install Openmediavault on a free Optiplex 5060 that I got. I have attempted installations with both Debian and Ubuntu, but I'm hitting a wall. The OS installs just fine, but the system doesn't recognize a bootable drive. I've spent about three hours troubleshooting after work and it's really frustrating. I thought that installing OMV over Debian would work, but now it won't even boot into Debian. Any advice on what I should do to get this working?

It sounds like you're running into some classic boot issues! First off, make sure you've disabled secure boot and any other BIOS settings that might interfere with the installation. Sometimes, using an actual DVD can be more reliable than a USB stick when booting—I've had that problem with Dells before. If you’re still stuck, you might need to reset the UEFI settings with jumpers, but I hope it doesn’t come to that! Good luck!

Yeah, I've faced the same issue! Disabling secure boot was crucial for me too. Hope you get it sorted!

You mentioned trying to install OMV on top of Debian, but I want to clarify that while OMV is based on Debian, it's important to make sure you're not overwriting your Debian installation unless you mean to. Since OMV doesn’t support UEFI, consider checking if your system is configured correctly for legacy boot. Have you tried adding the boot entry manually in the UEFI settings? Sometimes it needs a nudge to recognize the correct boot files.

I did attempt that, but it wasn't finding the files as it showed "file system not found." Only my USB drive is recognized right now.

When I installed on my Dell, I had to manually add the boot entry in the UEFI menu for Debian. Check under /boot/efi for the grubx64.efi or similar file. It’s a pain, but sometimes you just have to go in and fix it directly!

I tried that already but got an error saying it couldn't find the file system. It's super frustrating!
