Why doesn’t my Benfei VGA to HDMI work until after booting?

I have an HP Proliant ML310e Gen8 v2 that only has a VGA output, and I recently bought a Benfei VGA to HDMI converter. I noticed that the converter doesn't show any image until the boot process is finished, so I can't access the BIOS or set anything up until Windows Server starts and I see the loading screen. However, using a VGA cable with an older monitor provides an image right from when I power on the server. Are there better options for cables that will allow me to see the output from the very beginning, or is there something else I should try?

The Benfei VGA to HDMI you have is a passive converter, which means it can’t show anything until the system loads Windows. For BIOS access, you should look for an active VGA to HDMI converter that requires power—often they use a USB connection to function. Also, if your server supports it, remote access through iLO could be another way to get into the BIOS settings without needing a direct video output.

Yeah, I agree with GadgetGuru. An active adapter, like the one that uses USB for powering, will definitely help you see the BIOS screen. Here’s a link to a reliable one I found: [StarTech HDMI Adapter](https://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-HDMI-Adapter-Audio-Power-Black/dp/B00JQJV2NA). Just make sure it's compatible with your setup.
