Should I Choose 24GB or 32GB RAM Sticks for My Video Editing Rig?

I'm in the process of building a high-performance video editing rig and I'm debating between using 24GB RAM sticks versus 32GB sticks. For context, I'm looking at top-tier speeds of 8000MHz from G.Skill, but they only provide 24GB sticks at those speeds. Is there a noticeable performance difference between these options? Also, I'm curious if faster RAM speeds, like 7600MHz versus 8400MHz, really make a significant impact on performance, especially since I plan to run programs like Firefox, DaVinci Resolve, and Affinity Publisher/Designer simultaneously. I'm considering a total RAM capacity in the range of 64GB to 128GB as well. Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Definitely, faster RAM can help, but in video editing, size is often more critical than speed. You'll be utilizing RAM for storing video data, and fast storage is actually what’ll help your workflow the most. If you're converting files, that’s more about your CPU/GPU. Slow RAM may just delay finishing a project by a few seconds at most, so I'd focus on getting enough RAM overall to prevent bottlenecks.

That makes a lot of sense! So maybe something like 64GB would be sufficient for smooth multitasking?

Absolutely! Having a larger RAM capacity will keep everything running smoothly, way more than just upping the speed.

If you're looking to stick to really high speeds, getting 8000MT/s isn’t as easy as it sounds and requires luck with your CPU and motherboard. For most users, it’s just not worth the trouble, so stick with something more stable like 6000MT/s. Plus, remember to avoid using four sticks; go with two if you want high speeds!

Yeah, less is more in this case! Dual-channel RAM configurations usually help keep everything running perfectly.

Wow, I didn’t realize that. I thought four sticks would be better for performance!

Also worth noting that 24GB and 32GB DIMMs are often dual rank, which can provide better performance over single rank 16GB sticks. If you can get dual rank RAM that fits your needs, go for it!

Dual rank sounds promising! Does that mean I should lean towards 32GB sticks then?

TechSavvyJoe -

Exactly, more ranks typically offer better performance. If your setup lets you go dual rank, it's a good choice!

When it comes to your build, I'd prioritize stability and capacity over chasing higher RAM speeds. Many AM5 systems aren’t really designed to handle those extreme speeds reliably. Trust me, you're better off with a solid 6000MHz CL30 or even 6400MHz CL32 setup for optimal performance without the headaches. It’s not about just speed, especially for video editing; having enough RAM is key!

CreativeEditor99 -

Great point! Since speed isn't everything, what would you suggest for a video editing workload without falling into the trap of instability?

NoMoreCrashes -

Exactly! I’d rather have consistent performance than risk running at high speeds that could crash during a crucial project.
