Is it worth upgrading from a 5800X3D for better gaming performance?

Hey everyone! I currently have a gaming rig with an RTX 4070 Super and a 5800X3D processor, along with 64GB of DDR4 3200MHz RAM. I'm pondering whether I should upgrade to an AM5 7800X3D or a 9800X3D to get more FPS in games like Tarkov and Warzone. I've got an OLED display with a 360Hz refresh rate, so more frames would definitely make for a smoother experience. However, I'm also considering waiting for the next-gen AM6 CPUs. What do you all think? Is this upgrade worth it or should I hold off? Also, I'm not planning to upgrade my GPU any time soon.

But seriously, for the amount you could spend on a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM, it might not be worth it unless you're pushing the limits on settings with DLSS. The 5800X3D is still a solid chip!

Overall, if you do end up upgrading, I'd suggest waiting for AM6 so you can do a complete refresh of the motherboard, GPU, CPU, and RAM together. That way, you can make the most out of your investment and then maybe pass your 4070 Super to a streaming rig or sell it later.

What resolution are you playing? If you're targeting 1440p with a 360Hz refresh rate, and you’re using DLSS, you might see some benefits in Tarkov. I had a similar experience with my setup: the 5800X3D gave decent FPS, but upgrading to 9800X3D pushed me closer to 130 FPS on heavy games.

I'm aiming for 1440p 360Hz and yes, DLSS is on for Tarkov and Marvel Rivals.

It's kind of backwards to upgrade the CPU when your GPU is the biggest bottleneck in your setup. If anything, maybe maximize your efficiency by upgrading the GPU instead and save the CPU for when it's truly needed.

I recently got the 4070 Super too, and while it's great, I've realized Tarkov really can struggle with CPU load.

Definitely depends on the game choice, though.

You might want to consider waiting for a full rebuild to maximize your investment. Upgrading the CPU alone isn't going to give you the complete performance jump you're looking for.

Honestly, I don't think it's worth the upgrade right now. You’d need a new motherboard and RAM along with the CPU, and for the gains you'd get, the cost might not justify it. Sure, you'll see some improvements, but it won't be life-changing for that amount of money.

BudgetBuilder99 -

Yeah, I completely agree. The performance boost isn't substantial enough to warrant that expense. Better to save up for AM6 for a more meaningful upgrade.

A new CPU might not really help much, especially since most games are more GPU-limited. Tarkov is a bit different, but still, it could be your GPU holding you back more than you think.

CPUWhisperer -

That's true for most games, but Tarkov could benefit somewhat since it's heavier on the CPU.

If you can afford it, going from 5800X3D to 9800X3D would be beneficial, especially since you're playing CPU-heavy games and utilizing a 360Hz monitor. You can always upgrade the GPU later on if needed.
