I'm on the hunt for a sound card that includes an optical port for my PC, ideally priced under $200. I'm looking to connect it to my soundbar to enhance my audio experience. I get that sound cards aren't the hottest trend anymore, and most USB options I've checked out don't include optical ports, or they're priced way higher than I'd like—often over $500. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

You could always consider a new motherboard that has an optical port built in. Just a thought!
There are plenty of USB options available on Amazon for under $25. For example, check this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2DBGKL3. Just remember, since it’s a digital signal, spending hundreds won’t necessarily give you better sound quality. If you have a modern GPU, you can even utilize its HDMI for sound extraction with the right tools.
Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! I'm definitely weighing my options. I appreciate the insight into both cards and DACs!
Have you thought about going for an external USB DAC/AMP? There are some pretty decent models that come with optical outputs, RCA, and headphone jacks. They work well and can sometimes fit your budget!
If those external DACs are priced similarly to sound cards, I’m interested! However, the ones I found were around $500-$700, while I could snag a decent sound card with an optical port for just $180.
Just a heads up, most DACs don’t actually have optical outs because they’re designed for converting digital to analog. So typically, if it has optical, it might not serve the same function.
True, but I just upgraded my motherboard a few months ago to an AM5. I completely forgot to check for that optical port, and I really don’t want to go through the hassle of reinstalling everything.
