Help Needed: PC Performance Issues After Fresh Windows Install

Hey everyone! I recently did a complete wipe and fresh install of Windows 11 on my gaming rig, which has some decent specs: an RX 7800XT GPU, an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU, 32GB of Fury Beast RAM running at 4700MHz, and a 2TB Samsung SSD. It felt like a fresh start, but now I'm facing some frustrating performance issues.

The first thing I noticed is when I alt-tab out of a game, my cursor and the entire desktop lag for several seconds. This also happens when I'm running basic applications like browsers or Discord. My second monitor is so choppy, especially during gaming sessions. Lag spikes occur during level loads, making multitasking a real challenge.

I've checked everything: BIOS settings, all drivers are updated, and even disabled VRR from AMD's software. The GPU is averaging around 80% load while in games, CPU at around 20%, and RAM usually sits at 70%, which seems normal depending on the software or game. Despite everything being set up the same way as before the reinstall, my PC now struggles with multiple tasks, and each minor thing seems to cause more issues than it did before. I'm at a loss and would really appreciate any advice!

After a lot of trial and error, I found that certain background apps can really hog up resources, especially during gaming. You might want to disable any unnecessary startup programs or processes running in the background. It might be something simple causing those lag spikes.

I just built a similar setup and experienced some initial lag too. I think it could be the system just adjusting to the new Windows install. Like, there’s a chance it needs some time to optimize itself. If gaming starts to stutter significantly or if the lag continues, I’d dive into more detailed settings or even consider a clean reinstall of graphics drivers.

I’ve had similar issues, and I suspect it might be the way your system is managing resources between monitors while gaming. Make sure your graphics settings in the AMD software are optimized for performance, and you might want to check if there's a setting for handling multiple displays. Also, keep an eye on resource usage through Task Manager when you're experiencing the trouble - it could provide clues.

First off, I’d recommend checking your SSD's health. If your SSD isn't performing well, it can definitely cause all those lag issues. Run a quick test to see if it’s healthy or if there are any unusual readings. If it's running well, then we can look deeper into other potential root causes!
