I have an aging system with a Ryzen 1600X CPU and an ASROCK X470 Taichi Ultimate motherboard, paired with a 1070Ti GPU. It's been getting pretty sluggish, especially with high-resolution image processing in Lightroom, and I'm concerned about Windows 10's end of life. I'm contemplating my options for upgrading. What's the highest compatible CPU I can use with my current motherboard? Is there a High-End Desktop (HEDT) CPU that fits well and isn't a power hog? Also, how does RAM size affect performance on this board? Lastly, if I upgrade my GPU, are there any issues I should be wary of besides PCIe bandwidth? My main use case involves multimedia processing with programs like Lightroom Classic and DaVinci Resolve, along with some light gaming. I'd appreciate any insights or experiences you all might have!

Honestly, I’d suggest building a new system (motherboard, RAM, CPU) and just reusing what you can from your current setup. Your X470 can support up to Vermeer chips, so hunting down a used Ryzen 5 or 7 could extend its life a bit. If you decide to upgrade your GPU, you'll be fine with modern cards, but just keep in mind the age of your system could bottleneck some performance. If your budget allows for it, a fresh build is definitely the way to go!
Thanks for the info! For those Vermeer CPUs, are the 5800XT and 5900XT good choices? I’m just concerned if those high-core Ryzens can keep up with TDP and core speeds in less multi-threaded tasks.
You could definitely go for a Ryzen 5950X or a 5700X3D if gaming is a focus. Just remember, the max RAM you can realistically use will likely be 64GB. As for GPUs, anything from the RTX 5000 or AMD 7000 series should work fine, but expect around a 10-20% performance drop due to PCIe 3.0 limitations. I had a good experience with a similar setup and found it still held up, even if not at peak efficiency!
That's helpful info! Quick question: What happens once I surpass 64GB in RAM? Do the performance and timings take a hit?
Totally get it! And with a nice case like the Fractal R6, you can really max it out later on. Good luck!
