I just built my first PC for about 2700 Canadian dollars and I'm pretty excited about it! It's got a Ryzen 9 9900X paired with a PNY RTX 5080. However, after ordering everything, I came across the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which seems to offer better gaming performance for just a slight price difference. Now, I'm second-guessing my decision and wondering if I should have gone for the 7800X3D instead, despite my PC running smoothly. Here are my specs:
- PNY RTX 5080 16GB
- AMD Ryzen 9 9900X (12 Cores, 24 Threads)
- MasterLiquid 360L Core ARGB AIO
- ASUS TUF B850M-PLUS WIFI
- T-Force Delta 64GB (2x32GB) 6000MHz DDR5
- Crucial T500 2TB Gen4 NVMe SSD
- MSI MAG A850GL PCIE5 850W PSU
- SAMA 2851M Case with 6 ARGB Fans

Honestly, if you're primarily gaming, you might have missed out a little with the 9900X. The 7800X3D does give you a solid boost in FPS, especially for newer titles. However, your rig is still more powerful than most, so don't sweat it too much!
You could be looking at a 25% increase in some situations. It all depends on what games you play!
It sounds like you might have been influenced by some late-night YouTube videos! Just remember, the 7800X3D is great for pure gaming, but the 9900X is still a very capable CPU, especially if you're doing more than just gaming on this rig.
What do you mean by "capable"? Isn’t it a bit slower than the 7800X3D in games?
Yeah, but considering you’re gaming and doing schoolwork, the 9900X isn't a bad choice. Productivity tasks benefit from its extra cores too.
At the end of the day, the 9900X is still a powerful CPU! If you're content with performance and not obsessing over the absolute best, just focus on enjoying your gaming experience. The extra cache on the 7800X3D is definitely nice for gaming, but you're not far behind with the 9900X.
Even at 1080p, a lot of games will still run beautifully on your setup. Just enjoy the ride!
Thanks, that helps! I just wanted to make sure I didn’t completely drop the ball.
You can still do a lot with your setup. If it runs well and meets your needs, just enjoy what you have. Plus, if you can still return the CPU, maybe consider the 7800X3D if it’s a straight swap!
Is it really worth the extra cash for a 7800X3D, though? I heard it only makes a big difference in high-stress gaming situations.
The store offered me a trade-in option for $50 to switch to the 9800X3D. Should I go for it?

I’ve been hearing mixed things about this. Any opinions on how much more FPS I could expect with the 7800X3D?
