Hey everyone! I'm 15 and really passionate about programming and game development. I've got a solid grasp of Python and a fair amount of knowledge about game development. Now, I'm looking to take things more seriously and I'd love some guidance on what I should dive into next. I have some connections in a game development company that might help me land a job when I'm 16 or 17. What should I focus on learning to improve my skills and boost my chances in this industry? Any advice would be awesome!

You might want to check out some game development roadmaps online, like the one at roadmap.sh/game-developer. It’s packed with useful info, even though I haven't followed it myself. People generally find them helpful!

Thanks so much! That link looks useful, even if it seems a bit complicated, haha.

Since you have connections in the industry, I’d recommend asking them directly about what skills they value most. They might be looking for specific skills like 3D modeling, or programming in a certain language. Checking their website for job listings and requirements could also guide your learning path. It's a huge advantage to have that inside knowledge!

I'd suggest starting with tutorials for a game engine, like Unity, Unreal, or Godot. Unity's a great choice because it's widely used. But, if you know what engine your future employers use, definitely learn that one! Just keep making projects—bonus points if you can release something on Steam or itch.io. The gaming industry really rewards those who can think creatively and solve their own problems. It’s competitive and has its challenges, so being proactive is key!

If you feel comfortable talking to your connections about what to learn, definitely do that instead of relying solely on online advice. If they’re close enough to potentially hire you, ask them what skills they need. It'll give you a clearer idea of how to prepare for opportunities down the road!
