Could visiting a sketchy site cause malware on my iPhone?

I recently visited a suspicious Russian website on my iPhone 15, and now my phone seems to be behaving strangely. Today, I received an alert from Google about suspicious activity on my account, suggesting I might have malware. I quickly downloaded Malwarebytes and started using its VPN right after visiting that site. Could the VPN be part of the issue, and if I really do have malware, how can I remove it from my iPhone?

Have you tried connecting to a different WiFi? Sometimes this kind of alert can come from your ISP. I’ve had situations where my account flagged activity too, but it turned out to be nothing.

I wasn't connected to WiFi at the time, but after restarting my phone, it seemed to fix itself.

How did you get the alert from Google? Sometimes these notifications can be misleading and might actually be spam.

*Just a thought, but make sure it's a legitimate message!*

It blocked my search and made me do a CAPTCHA.

Just to clarify, both iPhones and Androids are pretty well protected against malware as long as you're not downloading apps from sketchy sources. Visiting a website alone doesn't usually give you malware. The VPN switch might have caused Google to trigger a captcha due to a change in your geographical location, not because of malware. So, you're probably fine!

If your iPhone is fully updated, you're likely in the clear. The latest iOS versions don’t have any known vulnerabilities, so it’s unlikely you have malware.

Thanks for the reassurance! It's good to know I'm not in trouble.
