My job title isn't very descriptive because my company uses the same titles across different departments, which can be confusing. Here are some of the tasks I perform:
- Providing tech support and troubleshooting issues
- Configuring devices, installing them, and integrating them into Active Directory and print servers
- Managing user accounts and permissions in Active Directory and various internal applications
- Automating tasks using Powershell and Python
- Adjusting records in internal databases using SQL snippets
- Overseeing application updates and working with vendors
- Physically installing network equipment, although there's another team for the network administration part, I coordinate with them for tasks like creating VLANs
- Writing extensive documentation
- Automating reports for other departments, which has led to a lot of additional requests for similar help
I'm uncertain how to represent my skills on my resume since my official title doesn't reflect my responsibilities very well and this is my only IT job so far; I'm looking for guidance on how to market myself effectively.

Titles in IT can vary quite a bit from one organization to another. If your work involves configuring systems and managing user access, you might be able to justifiably call yourself a Systems Administrator, provided you're comfortable explaining your experience if asked during an interview.
It's totally fine to claim the sys admin title if that's what you feel aligns with your responsibilities. Just be prepared to share specific examples of what you've done in interviews. Many managers understand that job titles don't always reflect the actual work.
From what you’ve described, it sounds more like you're in a tech support or help desk role rather than traditional sys admin work. Many people find themselves in similar situations where their job titles don’t capture the full scope of their duties. It might be worth considering whether a role like Level 2 help desk fits better.
You can definitely spin it a bit; I recommend using a title like IT Analyst or IT Engineer if you're concerned about authenticity. Just be clear about what you do, because employers know that titles can be misleading and look for specific skills and experiences.
