Can I Use a Wi-Fi Extender to Improve My Ethernet Connection?

I recently discovered a TP-Link AC750 OneMesh Wi-Fi Range Extender in my sister's old room. It's got an Ethernet port, and I'm curious if I can plug it into my PC. My question is: if I connect the extender to my PC with an Ethernet cable, will that improve my download and upload speeds compared to just using Wi-Fi? My PC is in the basement, while the router is upstairs, so running a direct Ethernet line from the router isn't really feasible. Is this extension a good solution for better stability or speed?

Using the Ethernet connection through the extender likely won't improve your speeds. It just adds an extra layer between your PC and the router, which means you're still relying on Wi-Fi for the connection. If possible, direct Ethernet from the router is always better.

Yeah, running a direct line is definitely the best route if you can manage it. Extenders can help, but they're still limited by the original Wi-Fi quality.

It really depends on the extender you're using. Some TP-Link extenders can work as a bridge, and if yours can do that, you might notice slight improvements. But remember, it also heavily relies on the Wi-Fi signal quality where the extender is set up, so placement is key.

Exactly! If the extender is placed poorly and receives a weak signal, it won’t help much at all. Try positioning it closer to the router.

In most cases, you're just converting Wi-Fi to Ethernet, which means speeds will be similar, if not worse. Ideally, you'd want a direct connection whenever possible. Powerline adapters could be an alternative if a direct line isn't feasible.

Some higher-end models allow better bridging, but if your extender is just repeating the Wi-Fi, then you're not gonna see much of an upgrade. Testing it out might help you gauge the actual difference yourself, though!

You could give it a shot, but don't expect a miracle. Since your PC's Wi-Fi quality impacts the extender, there's a chance of getting a little boost if your existing setup isn't strong. So go ahead and test it!
