I'm looking to install Linux on an SSD that I'm planning to use as a backup drive. My concern is about accidentally formatting my main drives during the installation process. Would it be possible to set up the SSD in an old laptop first and then move it to my desktop PC afterward? I'm not sure how well this would work since the hardware is different, and I'd like to avoid any issues.

Installing Linux on a different machine and then moving the SSD to your main setup can work, but it's often a bit of a gamble. It's usually safer to just unplug your existing drives while you do the install. That way, you avoid any accidental formatting. But if the SSD you're using is your backup, it might be worth setting it up on the old laptop first before moving it back. Just keep in mind there might be hiccups due to hardware differences.
That's why I thought it might be easier to set it up on the old machine first, then move it. My current setup has a drive that's tricky to unplug due to it being under the GPU.
