How Much Access Will My New Job Have on My Personal Phone?

I'm starting a new job next week that requires me to download work apps on my personal phone, which I'll also be using alongside a company iPad. I'm a bit concerned about privacy—will my employer be able to see anything on my phone beyond the apps they provide? Can they access my personal pictures or other data? Has anyone here had experience using their personal phone for work-related tasks? Did you face any privacy issues?

These days, it’s generally not wise to use your personal devices for work. If you absolutely have to, just don’t connect to company WiFi or install their apps. If their IT department won't provide a device for you, I'd think twice about that job—it might be a setup for trouble.

Honestly, if you can swing it, get a cheap second phone—those old-school flip phones work great for just work stuff! You can tell your employer this will be your work phone.

I work remotely and only have work apps like MS Teams on a separate profile on my personal phone. That way, they can’t access any personal stuff. It's a good way to keep work data separate from your personal life!

If you set the right permissions, they shouldn't see anything outside the app. But to be safe, getting a work-only phone is a solid plan—might cost $50-100 a month, but it’s worth your privacy!

You could look into getting a burner phone, but make sure it’s on their approved list! Just install the work apps and leave your personal phone out of it.
