Which Linux Distro Should I Choose for My ThinkPad?

I've been using Ubuntu Jammy on my 2017 Lenovo ThinkPad L490 with an i5 8th gen, 24GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD for programming tasks, primarily in Node.js, Rust, Python, Docker, and React Native. Initially, it booted quickly, but now it's taking around 3-4 minutes to start up, and after authentication, it can take another 30 seconds to a minute to load the desktop. I've noticed that resource usage spikes and it's laggy when multitasking, especially with Brave, two instances of VSCode, and two terminals. I've been using these tools consistently, but now it takes 20 seconds just to open an app. I came across Fedora KDE spin in my research; could it be a good fit, or should I consider something else?

Definitely consider paralleling your testing with a VM! You can try out a few distros like Fedora and others without fully committing until you find the right one.

Have a look at the distrochooser.de site! It helps you find a distro that fits your specific needs. Given your use of Docker and programming, you'll want something stable yet responsive.

You might want to check out CachyOS. It’s designed to be lightweight and could potentially improve performance on your ThinkPad, especially since you’re running into lag issues with your current setup.
