Why won’t my Linux Mint install boot from the hard drive?

I'm trying to set up Linux on an old Acer laptop for the first time. I created a bootable USB with Linux Mint, and the installation process seems to work fine. But when I remove the USB stick to boot from the hard drive, I keep getting a "no bootable media" error. I've tried installing both regular Linux Mint and LMDE, and I've tinkered with the boot order in the BIOS settings. I'm at my wits' end and could use some help!

It might help to check your BIOS settings more closely. Is your laptop trying to boot from another device instead? Most systems have a one-time boot menu. On my laptop, it’s F12, and I can see all my boot devices there. Can you find that option? If needed, snapping clear pics of your BIOS settings and sharing them could also clarify things.

On the topic of 'old' computers, just to clarify—what year is your laptop? Even a 2015 model shouldn’t have issues, though some can be tricky. Also, check if the hard drive shows up in BIOS. And make sure you have the latest BIOS version, especially on older machines. Lastly, how did you format the USB drive for installation?

Have you tried wiping the hard drive in GParted from the installation media? Making the whole drive unallocated could solve the issue by creating a new boot partition during Mint’s installation.
