Is it time to upgrade to 64GB DDR4 RAM or switch to DDR5?

I'm currently using 32GB of DDR4 RAM at 3600MHz from Teamgroup. I tend to have over 150 internet tabs open while I'm on Discord calls, streaming games, and watching movies across multiple monitors. I've noticed that my committed memory occasionally exceeds what I have available, and my in-use memory is getting pretty close to maxing out.

I'm trying to decide whether I should just buy another 2 sticks of the same RAM to make it 64GB or if I should jump to DDR5 and switch from LGA1700 to AM5.

Here's my setup:
* CPU: Intel Core i5-12600K
* Motherboard: Gigabyte Z690 AORUS Elite AX DDR4
* RAM: Teamgroup 32GB (16GB x 2) DDR4
* GPU: Gigabyte 5060Ti (getting a PNY 5070Ti today)
* Storage: 500GB M.2 NVME boot drive, 500GB SATA SSD, 4TB HDD
* PSU: 750W Gold+

Also, I need recommendations for case fans from MicroCenter. I've been considering the P12/P14s or some Noctuas, but it's been a while since I bought fans, so I'm not sure what's best right now.

Since you’ve noticed your memory usage is hitting the limit, going for 64GB is a smart move. Opt for 2x32GB if you can, but keep in mind prices for DDR4 are climbing. Adding a second set could result in lower speeds, possibly even down to 3200MHz, which might impact performance, but you'll have more available RAM overall.

Switching to DDR5 requires a new motherboard, which can be pricey. If you're satisfied with your current CPU, it's definitely cheaper to just add more RAM now. You can think about DDR5 when you're ready to upgrade your CPU in the future.

If you're running low on memory, then upgrading makes sense. I'd suggest adding two more sticks of your current RAM since it's more budget-friendly. You probably won't need to switch to a new motherboard just yet, especially since LGA1700 is nearing the end of its life cycle.
