Should I remove the plastic from my unused M.2 slot?

I just built a new PC with an Aorus Ultra motherboard that has three M.2 slots. I'm currently using one of them, and I've removed the plastic cover to ensure good contact with the thermal pad. However, I'm unsure about the second unused slot which still has the plastic on the thermal pad. Should I peel that off now, or is it better to leave it on until I'm ready to use that slot? I'm concerned about the thermal pad drying out, but I also don't want to risk any overheating issues. Any advice would be appreciated!

Just remember that if you leave it uncovered, it could collect dust. But if you're not using it yet, it makes sense to keep it protected with the plastic!

Good point, thanks!

I’d definitely leave it on until you need that slot. No reason to take it off now!

You're doing the right thing by leaving it covered until you're ready to use it. No harm in keeping it protected!

Thank you! I feel better about my choice now.

I'd say just leave it as it is for now. There's really no need to mess with it until you're ready to install an M.2 drive.

Thanks for the tip!

I think it's best to keep the plastic on. I assume the thermal pad will dry out faster if you expose it without a drive. Better safe than sorry!

That's what I was thinking! I hope there's no risk of burning or overheating if it's empty, right?

As long as there's nothing in there, it should be fine. Cases get warm, but not enough to cause issues in an empty slot.
