I'm trying to set up an Apple account but I keep getting stuck at the phone verification step. Do I actually need an iPhone or an Apple ID linked to my Gmail to create this account? When I enter my details, I receive a verification code in my email, which is fine. But after that, another code is sent to my mobile, and that's where everything falls apart—there's no code coming to my phone. Any advice?

You definitely don't need an iPhone to create an Apple ID. I recommend trying a different browser or using incognito mode, since Apple’s verification system can be a bit glitchy. Also, make sure you’re not trying to use a VoIP number; they block those from verification.
Yeah, I’ve heard a lot of people having similar issues lately, especially since they changed the Apple ID management to a new site. If you've tried incognito mode and it's still not working, maybe wait a bit and try again later. Sometimes these bugs sort themselves out.
