Why are forwarded plain text emails turning into ATT0001.txt attachments?

Has anyone figured out why forwarding plain text emails results in the body being attached as ATT0001.txt instead? I work with various accounting software that sends invoices as plain text emails. When a user forwards one of these emails, instead of showing the body in the message, it attaches the email's body as a file named ATT0001.txt. Is there a way to automatically convert these forwarded emails to HTML instead? Just to clarify, the emails are coming from outside sources, and our users are trying to forward them internally, so I can't control how external contractors format their emails.

I know it might sound silly, but are they forwarding as an attachment? Because if they're just clicking forward and typing extra info, that could mess things up, especially if the original email is formatted as plain text. It's worth asking.

No way! They're just forwarding the email as is, adding their notes right in the body.

The ATT0001 issue usually happens when the email's formatting doesn't get read correctly by the email client. It's tricky because it sounds like the accounting software may be mishandling the email's body and header sections. You might want to check how the messages are formatted when they come from that software. Occasionally, server-side rules can be written to fix the formatting, but that's dependent on your setup. Also, using tools like Power Automate to convert the email to a PDF before forwarding could be a workaround.

The problem is that these are external emails. Once they get forwarded, the recipient gets that weird ATT0001.txt attachment instead of just the email body.

Are these emails signed or encrypted in any way? That could complicate how they show up on forwarding.
