Why does my audio cut out after a minute on Ubuntu 24.04?

I'm experiencing a weird issue on my Ubuntu 24.04 LTS installed on an external SSD. Whenever I play a video or start a game, the sound only lasts for about one minute, then it goes completely silent. I checked Pulseaudio, and the audio levels still show sound is playing, but I can't actually hear anything. If I refresh the page for videos or restart the game, the sound comes back briefly but cuts out again. Does anyone know how I can troubleshoot or fix this?

You should definitely consider switching from Pulseaudio to Pipewire. Pulseaudio is pretty much outdated now, and you might find that Pipewire works much better. If you're using `pavucontrol`, make sure it's actually running on Pipewire, because it can also function with Pulseaudio. If you're stuck with Pulseaudio, you might want to try switching back, but Pipewire is generally the way to go nowadays.

Sounds like a frustrating issue! Also, make sure you're keeping your system updated and check if there are hardware compatibility issues. I've had similar issues arise before with external devices, so if you're using Bluetooth earbuds, it might be worth testing with wired headphones instead. Sometimes that can make a difference.
