What Should I Do If I Think I Got Hacked?

So, here's the situation: I downloaded something I probably shouldn't have for a game, and now my computer keeps blue screening whenever I log in. I know it was a mistake on my part, and I'm familiar with computers, but I'm really stuck on what to do next. I've already deleted the suspicious file and checked the task manager, but everything seems normal there. I feel pretty dumb for making this mistake, but I'd love some guidance on how to fix this issue. Additionally, I noticed that my ad blocker and VPN extensions are crashing when I log in. I tried disconnecting my Ethernet to see if that helps, but it didn't lead to any changes. Now, I keep getting crashes, although I managed to go five minutes without one after turning the WiFi back on. Any insights on what might be happening here?

It sounds like you might have malware on your hands. I would recommend checking for any dump files from the blue screens, which could help in understanding the crashes better. If you can boot into Windows normally or go into Safe Mode, check for dump files in C:WindowsMinidump. If you find any, zip them and upload to something like mediafire.com to share. Multiple dump files are ideal for analysis!

Yeah, and if you're not able to recover properly, consider downloading a dedicated malware removal tool. That could help clean up any residue left from that file.

Before doing anything drastic like wiping your drive, try using a rescue tool from a USB stick outside of Windows. That way, you can scan for any potential threats. But if you really want a clean start, formatting and reinstalling Windows is a solid route. Just make sure to back up your important files first!

I think that might be the best route. Just make sure you do it after backing up everything you don't want to lose. I've heard horror stories about losing valuable files during a reinstall!

If you're comfortable trying out a Linux distro, flash it to a USB and boot from there. It's a good way to back up files safely before doing a fresh install of Windows. Just be sure to double-check that your files are secure before wiping everything!

I had a similar situation in the past. It’s honestly the best way to ensure you’re not carrying over any hidden malware.

Let’s be real, it might be a good time to change all your passwords, especially for accounts like Roblox and your email, especially if you've already noticed strange login attempts. Security should be your priority, even if you manage to fix your computer!
