Hey everyone,
I'm looking for some guidance on what to do with my company-issued MacBook Pro. My contract was terminated suddenly two months ago, and since then, I haven't received any instructions on returning the laptop. The company I was contracted through has had its ties cut with the client due to some fraud issues, so now I'm left in limbo. Should I reach out to someone for instructions, or is it safe to assume it's mine now? If I can keep it, how do I wipe it clean for personal use without running into legal trouble? Any advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

A straightforward option might be to mail it back to them using a service like FedEx. Just pay for shipping, keep the tracking, and if they don’t pay for it, that could indicate they’re okay with you keeping it. This way, you have proof of your attempt to return it if anything pops up later.
Be cautious if the laptop has remote management (MDM); it could get locked if you wipe it. It’s wise to at least check its status before trying to reinstall anything. If you find it’s not enrolled, then you’re likely good to go with keeping it!
Thanks for the tip! I’ll check on the MDM status before making any moves.
Whatever happens, just be sure to try to return it first. It’s risky to keep it without any confirmation from the company since they can still track it. Keeping a good record of your communication could save you a lot of trouble.
Yeah, I wouldn't take any chances with potential theft claims or anything.
Exactly! Cover yourself, just in case.
Honestly, the simplest route is just to shoot an email to their procurement department. Let them know you have the laptop and give them a deadline to respond before you consider it abandoned property. This way, you protect yourself legally, and it gives them a chance to reclaim it if they want.
Sounds like a solid plan! Keeps things above board.
Definitely! You can't go wrong by being straightforward.
It's best to contact your former employer and ask what to do with the laptop. They might guide you on how to return it, and if they're chill, they could even wipe it remotely for you. It's good to have that paper trail just in case anything goes sideways. Better safe than sorry, right?
Totally agree! Just reaching out can prevent any potential issues down the road.
Yeah, being proactive is key. You don’t want them coming after you later on.
Love that idea! It’s a smart way to cover your bases.
