Is 64GB of DDR5 RAM Overkill for My Gaming PC?

Hey everyone! I recently upgraded my gaming setup to keep up with the latest AAA titles, and here are my specs:

- Intel i5 12600k OC'd
- NVIDIA 3070ti with 8GB VRAM
- 2TB M.2 SSD
- B760 gaming X motherboard
- Currently have 16GB of 3200MHz DDR4 RAM

My motherboard supports DDR5, and I'm debating between getting 32GB from a smaller brand for £50 ($67) or splurging on 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium for £130 ($173). I'm planning to overclock the RAM to around 5000MHz or higher.

Budget isn't a huge issue, but I'm curious about what would suit my system better in terms of performance and future-proofing. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Since you're currently rocking DDR4, if you want DDR5, you'd need a new motherboard. It's probably best to stick with upgrading to either 32GB or 64GB of DDR4, which is much cheaper. Spending over $200 just for DDR5 might not be worth it unless you're planning a complete overhaul in a couple of years.

64GB seems like overkill just for gaming. Most games won't use that much RAM for a while, but if you’re into multitasking or plan to do video editing later, it might be a good investment. Just know that you might not see a significant performance boost for gaming.

Your CPU can handle both DDR4 and DDR5, but remember your motherboard determines which RAM type you can install. If you go DDR4 now, it should suffice for gaming for a good while. DDR5 may provide benefits in the future, but currently, 32GB is ample.

Honestly, for gaming, 32GB is generally considered the sweet spot. You probably won't need more unless you're doing heavy multitasking or any content creation. Plus, overclocking RAM for just gaming usually doesn’t make a huge difference, so I wouldn’t stress too much about hitting that 5000MHz mark.
