Why Do My 1% Low FPS Readings Indicate Stuttering Even with High Average FPS?

I've noticed a strange issue with my gaming performance. I recently upgraded to an NVIDIA 5070 GPU with an Intel i5-13500 processor, expecting better performance. While playing, my frame rate seems stable and averages around 120 FPS, with a frame time of about 8ms. However, when I look at the overlay showing the "1% low FPS," it reveals a significant drop, showing numbers like 30-60 FPS at random moments, even though I never experience that kind of FPS in-game. This discrepancy doesn't seem to cause major lag, but I do notice some micro-stuttering coinciding with those low readings. What's causing this?

It sounds like your issue could be related to how different games handle frame delivery. Even with a solid average FPS, many games experience minor stutters due to engine behavior, which can affect the 1% low readings. It's likely that your monitor's variable refresh rate (VRR) feature is affecting how frames are displayed, especially if you're using G-SYNC. It's intended to minimize stutter by syncing frame rates with your display's refresh rate.

Glad to hear you’re enjoying your new GPU! Just a heads up, the stuttering might also be tied to how different games optimize their performance. For example, games like Destiny 2 are notorious for having fluctuating performance. Keeping your games updated and managing settings like capping FPS could help. And consider that some stutter variations might just relate to how the engine functions rather than hardware issues.

You mentioned using a G-SYNC monitor, right? That could definitely play a role here. If your monitor isn't functioning correctly, it might have issues with the VRR feature. But also realize that not all games are the same; some are more demanding than others, which can impact how well they perform and report frame rates. Try checking if your monitor's settings are all correct and see if disabling G-SYNC makes any difference.
