Lost in CSE: Need Help to Improve My Skills Before Placements

Hey everyone! I'm in my 3rd year of Computer Science Engineering, and I really feel lost right now. I just started my 5th semester, and I have a CGPA of 6.7 with some backlogs. I don't know anything about Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA) and my programming skills are lacking. I've realized I've wasted a lot of time in the past and I want to turn things around before placements hit in a year!

This semester, I'm tackling subjects like Machine Learning, Computer Networks, Software Engineering, Computer Architecture, Quantum Materials, and Foundations of Data Science. I've picked Data Science as my elective, and I'm thinking of focusing on Machine Learning, but I know I need a strong foundation first. I want to start learning DSA from scratch while improving my coding skills.

However, I'm struggling with managing my time, and I often feel overwhelmed. The college teaching isn't very helpful, so I'll need to rely on self-study. I tend to jump between topics without finishing anything, which is pretty frustrating. I really want to know how to balance learning DSA, Machine Learning, my college subjects, and working on projects.

If anyone has gone through something similar or can offer guidance, I'd appreciate tips on where to start, how to manage it all, useful resources, and any advice on building consistency. I'm serious about fixing this and don't want to waste this year too.

It sounds like you need to focus on study skills more than coding skills at this point. Have you thought about seeking help from your student services? They might offer some guidance or workshops that could make things clearer for you!

I appreciate the suggestion! But I think my main issue is clarity and direction rather than just study skills. I know I need to focus, but it’s hard to prioritize what to learn first.

I get that! It might help to sit down and outline what you need to accomplish first. Having that clarity could be a game changer.

Jumping between topics is a common issue. Try picking one thing at a time and really committing to practicing it until you feel comfortable. That way, you’ll build a solid foundation!

You should definitely try to learn one skill at a time. Pick DSA as your base since ML relies on having good problem-solving skills. There are tons of free YouTube tutorials that cover DSA topics well. Just stay consistent and practice daily!
