Why is UltraVNC on my laptop, and should I be worried?

I noticed UltraVNC appeared on my laptop without my knowledge. When I was about to shut down, I saw it listed among recently added applications, and it was installed on August 3rd, which is surprising since I haven't downloaded anything out of the ordinary. I ran a Windows security check, and no threats were detected. I have a few concerns: Was I potentially being recorded? How did it get on my laptop? What should I do to ensure no one has access to my laptop now, and how can I protect myself in the future? I typically avoid sketchy downloads and only install games from Steam.

Don't panic too much about being recorded if you just see the UltraVNC Viewer; that alone doesn't allow others to access your PC. It’s just an interface for connecting to a host. If you didn't install the server part, you're likely safe there. But you should definitely figure out how it got installed in the first place. Changing passwords and reviewing your security setup is a good move.

If you didn't explicitly install UltraVNC, that’s a red flag. It's possible it could have been bundled with another software or remotely installed by your IT if it's a work laptop. To check if someone has access at this very moment, it'd be wise to wipe your drive and do a fresh install of Windows. Also, update your passwords and review any linked accounts on your laptop.

You should definitely be concerned! UltraVNC is remote desktop software, meaning someone could control your laptop from far away if they had the right access. If you didn't install it, someone might have had a way into your system. My advice? Disconnect from the internet immediately. You could consider a complete Windows reinstall via USB to remove any trace of it. Just deleting the app might not be enough—there could be hidden files left behind. Also, if it's a work laptop, tell your IT department right away to ensure your data is secure.

I'd suggest taking this very seriously. If you didn't install it, it's time for an urgent cleanup. Reinstalling your OS is what many recommend, but it won't help unless you wipe your disk completely. Just uninstalling might leave behind things that could come back to haunt you. Stay safe and do some research on VNC software to understand what you've got on your hands.
