Hey everyone, I recently accepted a contingent offer for a SysAdmin position after working in Helpdesk. To be honest, I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed! I could really use some advice from those who have been in a similar situation or who have experience in this role. What should I expect, and what tips do you have for transitioning into sysadmin work?

Congrats! Make sure you document everything you learn. Having a record of your processes will save you a lot of headaches later. Also, do ensure your backups are reliable before experimenting with changes.

And yes! Backups are crucial! Without them, good luck trying to roll back changes.

Thank you for stressing documentation! I'm all about that orderly notebook life.

Welcome! And just a heads up—eventually, you might mess up and take down production systems. It happens to everyone, so don’t freak out when it does. Just own up to it and learn from it.

Yikes! I’ve heard that happen too... I’m just bracing myself for when it happens.

Definitely keep your backups in check! You’ll thank yourself later.

You'll definitely feel overwhelmed for a while—it’s part of the process. Just remember, every day is a learning opportunity. I've been a SysAdmin for 10 months now, and while I feel more confident, there's still so much to learn. Don't just skim the surface; dive deep into the systems you're working with—enjoy the journey!

Right? Thinking in terms of years of learning really helps. I'm hoping the same for myself too.

Exactly! It’s a continual learning curve, just like climbing any other ladder.

Congrats! Just remember, you're now in charge of everything. You'll end up being the go-to person even for the Helpdesk team, which can be both funny and frustrating. My advice is to empower your team instead of just jumping in to solve their problems. Make sure they have the knowledge and permissions they need to help themselves!

Helpdesk to the Helpdesk—now that’s a classic! You've really hit the nail on the head with that one!

It's so true! Teaching them to resolve issues will only make you and the team stronger!

Just remember, as the sysadmin, you're the authority on everything in your company's infrastructure. It's a lot, but take your time learning the ins and outs. Embrace the chaos and ask questions when you’re unsure—much better than winging it!

This is solid advice! Learning to ask questions is key.

I just need to make sure I know what I'm doing before acting on it!
